Application for Mutual Exchange
Guidance Notes
If you are a council or housing association tenant with a secured or assured tenancy you normally have the right to a mutual exchange.
You can apply to exchange your home with another tenant of Northampton Borough Council or any other council or a registered social landlord. There are some restrictions, for example, you cannot exchange into a sheltered property unless you are eligible for sheltered housing.
Exchanging is a popular way for tenants to move home and is likely to be quicker than waiting for a transfer.
The Homeswapper Scheme
If you wish to find a suitable property to swap you must first register your name and property details at www.homeswapper.co.uk - see link below. Homeswapper checks for possible swaps and saves them so you can log in at any time to see them. You will also receive regular match alerts by email, text or letter. If you are interested in a match you will then be able to contact the other tenant.
When the exchange is ready to go ahead you must submit a Mutual Exchange Application form by completing this online form or by completing a paper copy. Paper copies may be obtained by ringing the Housing Helpline on 0845 330 0637, or in person from the Guildhall, or by clicking the button below to download one.
